New ‘mini moon’ set to enter Earth’s orbit
Earth is set to play host to a “mini-moon” this week, as a small asteroid – about the length of a double decker bus – enters the planet’s orbit.The temporary guest, called 2024 PT5, is set to arrive on September 29 and is expected to befriend the regular Moon for around two months.
Earth will have a temporary mini-moon for 2 months this fall
You might not be able to see it without a powerful telescope, but Earth will get its own mini-moon for 57 days this fall as a big space rock known as 2024 PT5 cruises alongside us in a partial horseshoe-shaped orbit. This mini-moon should be pulled into our planet’s gravitational ZIP code from Sept. 29 to Nov. 25, according to NPR.
